SMARTRISK is committed to protecting the privacy of people who provide their personal information to the organization. We value the trust of those we deal with, and of the public, and recognize that maintaining this trust requires that we be transparent and accountable in how we treat the information that you choose to share with us. Modification of privacy policy

SMARTRISK reserves the right to modify this Privacy Policy at any time. Notification will be given if any significant change is made to this policy. Those who have registered or signed up for any of the SMARTRISK tools and resources found on the SMARTRISK Navigator site will be notified via e-mail if any significant change is made to this policy.

Collection of personal information

SMARTRISK collects limited personal information through the normal course of its operation and through its SMARTRISK Navigator website.

Defining personal information

Personal information is any information that can be used to distinguish, identify or contact a specific individual. This information can include an individual’s opinions or beliefs as well as facts about, or related to, the individual. Exceptions: business contact information.

Where an individual uses his or her home contact information as business contact information as well, we consider that the contact information provided is business contact information, and is not therefore subject to protection as personal information.

    • When donations are made to the organization
    • When individuals contact the organization requesting information
    • When orders are made for SMARTRISK materials
    • When individuals participate in surveys, conferences, learning sessions, and industry consultations
  • Information collected through the SMARTRISK Navigator

    SMARTRISK collects personal information:

    • When users sign up to receive website updates, SMARTRISK newsletters or other information resources
    • When users register to use informational databases or communication tools found on this website, or to use the Content Management System
    • When users send an e-mail regarding this website or its content to a SMARTRISK e-mail address
    • SMARTRISK will automatically receive information on users through server logs, which receive and record the following user information:
      • IP address
      • Number of visits
      • Pages visited
      • Duration of each visit
      • Search engine and search terms used to find this website
    • Information received through server logs will be used strictly for the following purposes:
      • To customize content to users’ preferences
      • To evaluate the website, and its effectiveness at meeting users’ needs

SMARTRISK uses information about you:

  • To provide you with SMARTRISK updates, new and existing program information and products, newsletters, and materials

  • To invite your participation in research surveys and evaluations
  • To provide you with tax receipts for donations and to solicit donations in the future
  • To keep track of volunteers and key contacts
  • To develop a network of Injury Prevention practitioners

Protection of personal information

SMARTRISK has implemented procedures to protect users’ personal information, in both electronic and physical form. These procedures include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • In the case of the Content Management System on the SMARTRISK Navigator, access to contributors’ personal information is limited to those SMARTRISK employees that are believed to require access in order to effectively provide service to website users
  • In the case of the Researcher Database on the SMARTRISK Navigator, access to researchers’ personal information is limited to those SMARTRISK employees believed to require access to the Researcher Database and when the researcher agrees to make his/her personal information available to other registered users of the database
  • In the case of SMARTRISK’s Contact Database and Donations Database, access is limited to SMARTRISK employees and is stored on an on-site computer behind a firewall
  • In the case of listservs, access is limited to only those SMARTRISK employees believed to require access to the lists and to listserv moderators
  • Personal information contained in e-mail format is restricted by password and is stored on an on-site computer behind a firewall
  • Encrypting personal information during transmission with industry-standard SSL encryption
  • All physical copies of personal information are stored in a locked cabinet

Privacy practices

Personal information gathered by SMARTRISK is kept in confidence. Our staff are authorized to access personal information based only on their need to deal with the information for the reason(s) for which it was obtained. Safeguards are in place to ensure that the information is not disclosed or shared more widely than is necessary to achieve the purpose for which it was gathered. We also take measures to ensure the integrity of this information is maintained and to prevent its being lost or destroyed.

We routinely offer individuals the opportunity to opt not to have their information shared for purposes beyond those for which is was explicitly collected.

SMARTRISK does not sell personal information to external individuals or organizations under any circumstance.

SMARTRISK may share personal user information through its ongoing operations in the following circumstances:

  • When the user knowingly submits personal information to a publicly available informational database or communication tool
  • When required to do so to satisfy legal requirements or requests by government agencies legally authorized to request personal information
  • When believed by SMARTRISK to be necessary to prevent illegal activities or to protect the physical safety of any person

SMARTRISK may send cookies to the computers of users who register to use informational databases or communication tools found on the SMARTRISK Navigator website, or to use the Content Management System. SMARTRISK may access these cookies upon return visits to this website.

Users of the SMARTRISK Navigator can review their personal information as collected by SMARTRISK through the website at any time, by one of the following methods:
